Out and about in Leicester - October 2019

Image
These photos were taken in Leicester city centre in October 2019. A mosaic made of Lego installed in the Marks and Spencers in Leicester to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings. A number of themes run through this installation: the mosaic draws from Roman Leicester, but has been given a modern flavour in being made of Lego, while Leicester has for years been associated with aerospace in the United Kingdom, notably being home to the National Space Centre. Ritland Street, seen from Charles Street. St. George's Tower. This 82-metre-tall building was built in the 1960s and refurbished in the mid-2000s, when it took up its distinctive blue colour. It contains a hotel, student accommodation, a leisure centre and 250,000 square feet of office space. Granby Street. We have one too! The Everlast gym and Flannels store on Halford Street. These premises were formerly a BHS store. The square at the end of Gallowtree Gate, looking towards Granby Street. The upper store...

The Churches of Loughborough - All Saints Church with Holy Trinity, Loughborough

Image
Churches: the places where the people go to worship God Almighty. Some are big, and some are small; some are plain, while some are fancy. For me as a Christian, the churches up and down Great Britain are a testament to the faith of our forefathers, (though to me, it is a great pity that these days, many a church building has been 'either demolished or profaned'.*) As someone who also admires architecture, I do find (most of) these sacred buildings a source of inspiration. The Church has defined our cities, our culture, and our communities. This is the first set of photographs in a series of (non-consecutive) posts where I share my photos of these hallowed places. We'll start, firstly, with All Saints Church in the town centre, as virtually everyone who's reading this who is in or near Loughborough will know about it. All Saints' Church, officially All Saints with Holy Trinity, is the parish church of Loughborough. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, a...

The case of the vanishing telephone box

Image
Until very recently, one could find a telephone box (of the KX100 sort) at the end of Wordsworth Road in Thorpe Acre, between the village green and the shops. March 2021 However, when I visited the shops earlier today, I noticed that the phone box was gone, with the only signs of anything having ever been there being some newer-looking bricks for paving and a patch of tarmac that wasn't even properly set yet. It's just a pity that I didn't arrive earlier to see the (awful-looking, by the way) telephone box being taken away. It was there... but it's not. P.S. In case you're interested, the telephone number was 01509 216364.

This Citroen H Van food truck was parked up occasionally at the railway station several years ago. These photos were taken in May 2015.

Scenes in Shelthorpe

Image
These photos were taken on the 16th of November 2019. Shelthorpe's local shops are like a town centre of its own. The shops boast a Texaco petrol station, a McDonald's, Loughborough's Tesco Extra, a Domino's Pizza (this picture was taken prior to its opening), a pet shop, cafés and takeaways, two convenience stores, a pharmacy and post office and a variety of other establishments, which are all in a distinct area along part of Park Road and around the roundabout. The interior of Tesco Extra, taken from the store café. The sea of shopping trolleys parked outside Tesco Extra. George Sharp Court, off Farnham Road. The Farnham Road green. Farnham Road is on the right, George Sharp Court is in the centre of the background, and Lingdale Close is on the extreme left. The Farnham Road play area, with Farnham Road in the background.
