Ten little things

Image
  1. A nice gesture When passing the Specsavers in the town centre last month, I noticed a bin with several umbrellas inside left for use by customers waiting in line to get inside. I think this is something customers will really appreciate on a rainy day. 2. Wrong tense On a bus to Leicester last month, I noticed that the sticker on the side of the dashboard of the bus upstairs which informed people about the use of CCTV had a spelling mistake... The sticker aboard Arriva's 4425  reads, "Relax. Were keeping an eye on everything." It could mean that "We're keeping an eye on everything" or, for those who are more cynical, it could mean, "We were keeping an eye on everything", implying that they're no longer doing so! 3. Altered road sign Later that day in Oadby, south of Leicester, when I was waling from the town centre to Brocks Hill, I came across this street sign at Chestnut Avenue. It now reads, 'CHESTNUT S AVENUE'. 4. An unusual ro

Ten photos of my town

Ten more photos of my lovely town. As well as an announcement... Goods Yard Close, seen from Charnwood Forester End in February 2022. Note the unusual road name signs on either side of the road, which are styled after the signs of a 1960s British railway station - definitely better than the standard signs! Station Avenue, named for the Loughborough Derby Road railway station, seems to have been given a facelift, as it has been tarred, with a dividing fence installed  to separate pedestrians from vehicles. The only thing that's wrong with this is that there's no pedestrian access into the yard at the end of the road. It is seen here from the Station Street end in February 2022. The western section of Byron Street in February 2022. I honestly think that this is the worst-paved section of road in Loughborough - look at all the potholes! Sorry, Byron Street. King Street in February 2022, looking north towards Wharncliffe Road. (By the way, contrary to what certain maps say, there

Stapleford Memorial Park

Image
Stapleford Memorial Park is a park on the Ashby Road estates. It is accessed from the trail along the former Charnwood Forest Railway, from Grassholme Drive and from Pitsford Drive, and is bounded by the former railway, the Shortcliff Brook and the housing estates. The park was opened in 1976 and was named after Charnwood's parks superintendent Tommy Stapleford, who passed away that year; a tree with a plaque on the hilltop  commemorates the event. The park has some challenging terrain; a steep hill fills much of the park, the hilltop being closer to the Grassholme Drive entrance. It is difficult to communicate just how steep the hill is through the selection of photographs I have here! There was once a playground at the bottom of the hill, but it was removed in the mid-2010s. These photos were taken in September 2020.

Works in Devonshire Square and Bedford Square

Image
In early 2021, work commenced on a £2.6 million project to revamp the Wards End area between Devonshire Square and Bedford Square. These photos were taken on the 25th of March 2021. Bedford Square Wards End Devonshire Square Devonshire Lane This shop is stranded! Home Bargains This one's also stranded... ...and so is this one! Since then, the works have come a long way. We now have a spacious new square (well, it was always there, but it was filled with cars), and we're getting wider footpaths as well as a new-look Bedford Square.
