Around the villages

I took these pictures when I went on a long cycle ride in mid-April 2021, passing through Hathern, Zouch, Normanton-on-Soar and Stanford-on-Soar before returning to Loughborough.

Fields to the north of Main Street, near Zouch.

Main Street, Zouch, looking west. The natural channel of the River Soar is on the left.

Main Street, looking east towards Zouch.

Main Street, at the eastern end of Zouch, looking at the canalised section of the River Soar. Zouch seems to be a village of islands - on Google Maps I counted six!

The A6006, just east of Zouch, looking east.

The village of Sutton Bonington is visible from here.

Panning to the right, we see Moor Lane, which leads into the village of Normanton-on-Soar.

This classic telephone box is one of many that are now used to house defibrillators.

The Stanford Road bridge, to the east of Normanton-on-Soar. Here the road crosses the Midland Main Line.

Stanford Lane, looking south down the bridge.

Looking across the fields to Loughborough at Normanton Lane.

This bridge carries the Midland Main Line over the River Soar.

Loughborough, seen from Normanton Lane. Note the wharf developments, the Carillon Tower and The Rushes Shopping Centre.

Towers Hall, Loughborough's tallest building, at 64 metres. The large Brutalist student block sticks out in the otherwise conservative landscape.

Once again seen from Normanton Lane, but in almost the opposite direction, is the Ratcliffe Power Station, situated to the north of Ratcliffe on Soar. The power station's eight huge cooling towers and its 199-metre tall chimney are visible for miles around.

Main Street, Stanford-on-Soar, looking south.

The entrance to the Brush/Falcon complex to the north of the Midland Main Line, at Meadow Lane, Loughborough.
