A very special tree at the University

In front of the Schofield Building (Mathematical Sciences) on the University campus is a small tree surrounded by a short wooden fence. You may ask why this little tree warrants such protection. When you read the blue plaque on the wall behind, you'll begin to see the amazing connection behind this tree.

The plaque on the wall of the Schofield building reads:
"This apple tree is a direct descendant of Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree at Woolsthorpe Manor, gifted to the Department of Mathematical Sciences by the National Trust.
It was planted by Sir Michael Berry and Sir David Wallace on 14 November 2019."

So it's quite clear that this is a very special tree after all. And someday we'll be able to eat of the fruit of this special tree.
