Loughborough's newest street - Ploughlands

In April I visited the Willowbrook development by William Davis Homes, just off Leicester Road, to see the development's sole road, Loughborough's newest road, Ploughlands.

Lodge End is the name of the section of the former road to the hamlet of Woodthorpe between Leicester Road and its end on the Trinity Gardens estate.

Lodge End continues over a bridge to the left, while Ploughlands starts on the right.

The drainage pond at the front of the estate, a feature characteristic of many new developments.

But as new as this road is, it won't be Loughborough's newest road for long. A smaller development of bungalows off Westfield Drive, near the university, already apparently given the name of Newton's Place, as seen on a sign in the window of the Moore & York estate agents of Wards End. Then, of course, there will be loads of new roads over the next few years with the Garendon Park development, and it will be interesting to see what these future roads will be called. Some of the roads on the Garendon Park estate have already been given names:

  • William Railton Road, named after an architect who designed various works such as follies on the Garendon estate, All Saints Church Thorpe Acre with Dishley, Beaumanor Hall near Woodhouse and Nelson's Column in London! Part of the main road through the estate, it was previously given the provisional name of Garendon Way in earlier documents (which would have resulted in a third road in Loughborough being given the name of Garendon besides Garendon Road and Garendon Green.)
  • Landseer Crescent
  • Baily Road
  • Barbary Close
  • Carew Drive
  • Craigleith Avenue
  • Dartmoor Close
  • Ternouth Close
  • Watson Close
  • Woodington Drive
(Names taken from Charnwood Borough Council's map under the layer of New Road Development.)
